On December 19, the Inauguration Ceremony of Tsinghua University-CSII Advanced Intelligent Database Joint Research Institute (hereinafter referred to as "Joint Research Institute") and the first meeting of its management committee were held in Tsinghua University’s FIT Building. Yang Bin, Vice President of Tsinghua University, and Wang Anjing, Chairman of Client Service International, Inc. (CSII) attended the ceremony.
Yang Bin addresses the meeting
Yang Bin noted that Tsinghua University is prioritizing high-quality development, constantly strengthening basic research, promoting interdisciplinary studies and improving the effectiveness of education. He believed that this cooperation would inject new vitality into the university’s talent training, faculty development, basic research and technological innovation. Database is one of the basic research fields to be tackled in China. It is necessary to speed up tackling key core technologies, optimize the layout of the technical infrastructure, and strive for the commanding heights of the basic technologies of database systems. The Joint Research Institute will fully unite and gather Tsinghua’s talents in this field, fully leverage its academic and technological advantages, integrate domestic first-class enterprise products and industry resources, and cultivate a world-class and domestic leading R&D environment, so as to make greater contributions to training high-level talents, further enhancing the technical level in this field, and addressing the country’s major needs.
Dai Qionghai addresses the meeting
Academician Dai Qionghai, Dean of the School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) of Tsinghua University and Director of the Beijing National Research Center for Information Science and Technology (BNRist), said that breaking through the core technology of independent and controllable database will lay an important foundation for the country’s new infrastructure. The Joint Research Institute will give full play to Tsinghua University’s accumulated academic and technological advantages in this important field, and the BNRist will rally strength to do a solid job in the database field.
Wang Anjing addresses the meeting
Wang Anjing noted that the Joint Research Institute was established to implement President Jinping’s important instruction that “we must make breakthroughs in the domestic production of technical instruments, operating systems, and basic software, encourage research institutions and universities to carry out joint research with enterprises, and improve the level and application scale of domestic alternatives, strive to achieve the goal of using independent research platforms, instruments and equipment of our own to solve major basic research issues as soon as possible.” It was believed that this in -depth cooperation with Tsinghua University would be successful. The Joint Research Institute, following its inauguration, will promote industry - university - research collaboration, constant research and development innovation, and solve technical problems that hinder the country’s development, laying a solid foundation for the development of intellectual property power in the new era.

Zhou Lizhu, former Dean of the Department of Computer Science, Feng Jianhua, former Deputy Dean of the Department of Computer Science, Li Guoliang, Deputy Dean of the Department of Computer Science, Zhang Yong and Associate Researcher Li Chao BNRist and more than 80 representatives of the two cooperating parties participated in the event.

Following the Inauguration Ceremony, the first meeting of the Management Committee of the Joint Research Institute was held, chaired by Yang Bin, Director of the Management Committee. The meeting deliberated on the Articles of Association and the Annual Work Plan 2023-2024 of the Joint Research Institute, defined the founding mission, research contents and management regulations of the Joint Research Institute, and determined the key directions and tasks for collaboration in the new year.
The Tsinghua University-CSII Advanced Intelligent Database Joint Research Institute, based on the BNRist, Tsinghua University, brings together multidisciplinary experts from the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Automation, the School of Software, the School of Economics and Management, and the School of Public Administration, headed by Xing Chunxiao. The Joint Research Institute will serve the country’s major strategic needs and spearhead the development of advanced intelligent databases with independent intellectual property rights, committed to improving the level of substitution and application of domestic alternatives in the field of databases of key industries, promoting related technical infrastructure construction and application innovation, strengthening frontier theoretical innovation, talent training, achievement transformation and international exchange, and promoting the healthy and sustainable development of China’s database technology and industry with an original and independent brand.
